Skincare is super important, but the only downside for this must-needed beauty ritual is the amount of money we spend on products! Seriously, the hole it can put in our pockets can often be daunting – especially if the so-called miraculous product we have purchased does little to nothing for our skin.
Our skin is our largest organ, so we should always treat it with the respect it deserves… And what better way to respect it than to use proven, natural remedies? In the long-run, these DIY ingredients could save you hundreds. Good skincare doesn’t have to be expesive; here are a few budget-friendly skincare hacks that will keep your skin replenished and rejuvenated without breaking the bank.
Tea Bags for Dark Circles Under Eye Puffiness

After preparing a lovely cup of tea, always remember to store the used tea bag in the fridge. Once the teabag has cooled, place them gently underneath your eyes for 10 minutes – this will reduce puffiness and the appearance of dark circles. The caffeine and tannins in tea are the stars of the show here – they effectively help draw out fluid.
Frequently Changing Your Pillowcase

The oil and dirt from your hair and your face build up at an accelerating rate! If you you are susceptible to breakouts, changing your pillow case every 2 days might grant you a huge difference. Having a pillowcase that that is gentle on the skin (e.g. silk or cotton) is also a great idea.
Rice Water

You probably dump the water you boil rice in down the drain, but did you know you could use this as an amazing hair conditioner? The steps are extremely simple:
Rinse your rice to get rid of dirt and pesticides, then get rid of the water.
Next, place the clean rice in water for a second time.
Swirl the rice thoroughly until the water turns cloudy.
Separate the rice and water and store the water.
The next time you then shower, massage the rice water into your hair starting from the roots and making your way down. Leave in your hair for 15 minutes and rinse, and voila!
Sugar Lip Scrub

If you want to keep your lips soft and plump, exfoliating is an important process to include in your skincare routine. Often an overlooked step, taking care of your lips is just as important as taking care of your skin. The good news? Making a scrub is super easy and super quick:
Add 1 teaspoon of honey and olive oil to every teaspoons of sugar.
The honey and olive oil will hydrate and moisturise while the sugar simultaneously scrubs off dead skin on your lips.
Turmeric

As seen in my all-time favourite DIY face mask video here, turmeric is a vital ingredient in any home-made face mask. It heals scars, harmonises skin tone and gives an ethereal glow after a few weeks of application. It’s an incredible cost-effective spice that is beneficial in our diets and our skin.
Oatmeal

Calling all irritated-skin sufferers! Oatmeal doesn’t just have to be breakfast – use it as a face mask for the perfect pick-me-up remedy for days where your skin is feeling irritated or troubled. The reason why this ingredient is magical is due to the phenols contained within the grains; it is a natural anti-inflammatory property. Simply add equal amounts of honey and oatmeal together and apply it to your face.
Amina's Top Tip: To maximise the results, use unprocessed oatmeal and organic honey.
